The Best Non-Alcoholic Eggnog Recipe

This homemade alcohol free eggnog is perfect for the holiday season. It’s easy to make, divine to drink, and because it’s non-alcoholic the kids can enjoy this mocktail too.

Here we are again at the start of December. The tree is up, the presents are (mostly!) wrapped, and it is well and truly time for a non-alcoholic eggnog.

2 glasses of eggnog topped with whipped cream and a cinnamon stick, with a bottle of non alcoholic Lyre's American Malt in the background this recipe

This eggnog recipe is sponsored by Lyre’s. Thank you for supporting the brands that make The Mindful Mocktail possible.

This Christmas drink recipe is:

Easy: even if you’re not super confident in the kitchen, you’ll find this recipe simple to make. Yes, it takes a little more effort that store bought eggnog, but this homemade version is SO worth it, trust me!

Great for a crowd: one of my favourite things about this eggnog is I can make it in advance, or even the day before. This means when it’s due to be served there is nothing to prep. It can simply be poured into a glass and topped with your choice of goodies.

Creamy and delicious: this smooth, decadent eggnog is like a creamy treat in a glass. Top it off with optional whipped cream and cinnamon and it makes the ideal dessert drink.

Great for non-drinkers and kids: as someone who doesn’t drink, nothing makes me happier than a host who has the alcohol free drinks at the ready. And I have to say, my boys absolutely adored this eggnog – they couldn’t get enough! In fact, it’s the only way to get eggs into them at the moment.

What is eggnog?

This might seem like a pretty silly question with a very obvious answer to my friends over in the States, but to the rest of us it isn’t quite as clear!

Eggnog is a dairy based drink recipe that has been around for hundreds of years. It used to be referred to as a ‘milk punch’ and usually had alcohol added. It’s super rich and creamy – it literally tastes like you are drinking dessert. It reminds me of melted ice-cream!

There are plenty of variations out there, but this recipe is made with egg yolks, sugar, cream, milk, spices, vanilla and Lyre’s American Malt (optional). It’s loosely adapted from this eggnog recipe.

If you’re looking for more non-alcoholic Christmas drink recipes, try these:

Does this recipe use cooked or uncooked eggs?

While eggnog is traditionally made with raw eggs, this recipe is a cooked version. I received the feedback that uncooked eggs makes the majority feel a little ‘ick’. To be honest, I didn’t like the idea of drinking raw eggs either!

Plus there is the small risk of bacteria in uncooked eggs, so I thought it was best to make this version with cooked eggs. This makes is safe for everyone to drink.

Ingredients

This non-alcoholic eggnog contains egg yolks, heavy cream (also known as thickened cream), milk, sugar, spices, vanilla extract and Lyre’s American Malt (a delicious, optional addition).

A word on Lyre’s American Malt – if you haven’t tried this already, I encourage you to! This spirit is a unique, premium, non-alcoholic beverage and adds an extra touch of decadence to this already divine drink. It tastes of vanilla, toasted nuts and herbal notes with a long mellow finish.

It pairs perfectly with the rich, creamy eggnog.

The Lyre’s American Malt can be omitted if serving this drink to children or those who prefer to steer clear of non alcoholic spirits – it still tastes beautiful without.

How to make alcohol free eggnog

Firstly, whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture lightens in colour and goes creamy. I find an electric beater easier for this but you can use a hand held one if you prefer.

Place cream, milk, ground nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves in a saucepan over low-medium heat. Stir to combine until the mixture is steaming slightly. Don’t let it boil.

Add a large spoonful of the milk mixture to your egg mixture, then whisk it quickly to combine. Add another large spoonful and whisk again. Repeat this process until half of the milk mixture has been added to the egg mixture.

Remove the cinnamon sticks from the milk mixture, then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan on the stove.

Whisk constantly until the mixtures thickens a little. This will only take a few minutes. Don’t worry if it doesn’t seem thick enough, it will thicken more as it cools.

Remove from the stove and stir in the vanilla.

Place eggnog in a jug, cover and place in the fridge to cool. If you love cinnamon, add it back into jug before placing in the fridge to steep further.

Pour into your favourite glasses or mugs and stir in 30ml/1oz of Lyre’s American Malt to each glass right before serving. Add optional whipped cream, powdered cinnamon or nutmeg.

I hope you love this non-alcoholic eggnog recipe as much as I do!

Course: Drinks
Cuisine: American
Prep Time: 1 hour
Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 30 mls Lyre's American Malt optional
  • Whipped cream and cinnamon for topping optional

Instructions

  • Whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture lightens a little in colour and goes creamy. An electric beater makes this easier but a handheld is fine too.
  • Place cream, milk, ground nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves in a saucepan over low-medium heat. Stir to combine until the mixture is steaming slightly. Don't let it boil.
  • Add a large spoonful of the warm milk mixture to your egg mixture, then whisk it quickly to combine. Add another large spoonful and whisk again. Repeat this process until half of the milk mixture has been added to the egg mixture.
  • Remove the cinnamon sticks from the milk mixture, then pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan on the stove.
  • Whisk constantly until the mixture reaches about 160F on a cooking thermometer or thickens a little. This will only take a few minutes. Don't worry if it doesn't seem thick enough, it will thicken more as it cools.
  • Remove from the stove and stir in the vanilla.
  • Place eggnog in a jug, cover and place in the fridge to cool. If you love cinnamon, add it back into jug before placing in the fridge to steep further.
  • Pour into your favourite glasses or mugs and stir in 30ml/1oz of Lyre's American Malt to each glass right before serving (optional).
  • Top with whatever you choose. I love whipped cream and powdered cinnamon.

Notes

Tips: If the eggnog is too thick once it has cooled, add a tablespoon or 2 of milk and run it through a blender.
If the eggnog isn’t completely smooth, strain it through a sieve or run it through a blender.

Cleansing Ginger Lemonade 🍋 With only 3 ingred Cleansing Ginger Lemonade 🍋

With only 3 ingredients (plus water!) this healthy lemonade is perfect for Dry January and is super easy to make.

I use monkfruit sweetener because it’s all natural and contains zero net carbs, making this lemonade completely sugar free with next to 0 calories.

✨Don’t forget to save this recipe✨

Ingredients

▫️ 2.5-3 inches fresh ginger, sliced
▫️ 1 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
▫️ 1/3 cup powdered monk fruit sweetener
▫️ 4 cups water

Method

Slice the ginger into small rounds.

Place ginger, water and monkfruit sweetener into a medium size saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Bring to a low simmer. Turn the heat to low, cover, and leave to infuse for 10-15 minutes.
Remove from heat and leave to infuse for a further 15-30 minutes. The longer you infuse, the strong the ginger flavour will be.

Remove the ginger and add the lemon juice to the saucepan. Give it a gentle stir.

Refrigerate for at least an hour.

Serve over ice.

Tip: if you don’t have monk fruit sweetener you can use regular sugar or a sweetener of your choice. If using something like Stevia, remember it’s extremely sweet so you won’t need the full amount. Refer to the instructions on packet for conversions.

Cheers and enjoy! 💙💛

I received some DM’s after last weeks reel sayin I received some DM’s after last weeks reel saying that while many of you are feeling better physically after 1 week alcohol free, you’re also feeling cranky & emotional.

It reminded me of a story I shared early on, so I’m resharing in the hope that it helps explain why.

‘When I first took a break from drinking, I spent a lot of time feeling really pissed off.

I didn’t understand what was happening.

Wasn’t I supposed to be feeling better?

I mean sure, it was great to not have to deal with hangovers. My skin was clearer. I was sleeping better. The physical stuff was great. The mental stuff not so much.

My emotions seemed extreme. I would get teary over things that hadn’t made me teary before. I was getting easily frustrated at little things.

What the heck was going on?

Then one night it all made sense.

My husband & I were talking about our plans for the weekend. We were doing something I had really been looking forward to.

I got this feeling in my stomach, like butterflies but better. Like a thrill. It reminded me of how I used to feel on Christmas Eve as a child. Or in the countdown to my birthday. That utter excitement & anticipation of something awesome about to happen.

I realised what the feeling in my stomach was. I was feeling joy. I couldn’t remember the last time I felt pure, swelling of the heart, giddy joy like that.

See, the thing with alcohol is that it numbs you right down. It numbs every emotion down.
We call it ‘taking the edge off’, but what it really does is dulls the feelings so you don’t have to ‘feel them’ as hard.

The downside? It dulls the good stuff too. Like joy. And excitement. And that swelling of the heart kind of happiness. Those feelings I thought were reserved only for kids.

It wasn’t long after this ‘Aha’ moment that I came across this quote from Brené Brown & it all made sense.

These extreme feelings of being super irritated then overly joyful was simply me feeling the full range of human emotions.

Which is normal. And healthy.

As Glennon Doyle says in Untamed:

‘Feelings are made for feeling. All of them’.’

Can you relate to this?

Sparkling Virgin Jalapeño Margarita

Makes 1

▪️3-4 slices fresh jalapeño, seeds removed (or leave them in if you prefer the heat)
▪️2oz/60mls freshly squeezed lime juice
▪️1 teaspoon maple syrup (or more to taste)
▪️1oz alcohol free tequila or a splash of apple cider vinegar
▪️1 cup lime flavoured sparkling water
▪️Salt for rim

Place jalapeño, lime, maple syrup, a splash of lime sparkling water and tequila/ACV over ice in a cocktail shaker.
Shake vigorously for about 30 seconds.
Strain mixture into an ice filled glass rimmed with salt.
Top with lime sparkling water and stir gently.
Garnish with some extra jalapeños and serve.

Note: if you don’t have alcohol free tequila, the apple cider vinegar will give this recipe that little kick that is missing from the alcohol.

Give me a 🙋🏼‍♀️ if you LOVE this quote Give me a 🙋🏼‍♀️ if you LOVE this quote as much as I do!

This is one of my all time favourite quotes by the incredible @brenebrown and it’s a perfect one to share in the first week of Dry January.

Have you thought about why you are participating in Dry Jan? It might be you’re having a dry month to simply give your body a break and you have a perfectly normal relationship with alcohol. If this is you, that is INCREDIBLE - please carry on as you were 😉

For me, I used to participate in dry months as a way to ‘prove’ to myself that I didn’t have a problem with alcohol. I would get to the end of the month and think proudly ‘See? SEE? You can get through a whole month without wine. There is nothing wrong with you. If there was, you’d never be able to take a whole month off.’

Everyone around me was so surprised (and supportive) when I’d take a break - I remember one year I came in as one of the Top 10 fundraisers in Australia for Ocsober because it was so unusual for me to go without my beloved wine 🙃

Of course, in the weeks that followed I’d consume so much alcohol to make up for it I would have been better off to skip the dry month in the first place.

Now is a good time to think about your reason for doing Dry January. Is it to simply take a break from alcohol, or is there more to it?

Congratulations on being almost one week in - you’re doing great! ✨✨
