Quick note: I did taste test these tequila alternatives neat for the purpose of the reviews, but as a general rule, non-alcoholic spirits are not really designed to be consumed this way. Where they really shine is when they are mixed into a mocktail like a non-alcoholic maragarita.

I'm definitely not a sommelier or spirits expert, and I'm not going to pretend I can identify twenty different botanicals in every sip. That's exactly why I tested each one both neat and in the same mocktail. The bottles below are, in my opinion, the best of what's currently available.

If I could only keep one bottle from this lineup on my bar cart, it would be Free Spirits. It was the most well-rounded bottle I tested and the one I'd happily recommend to anyone looking for a non-alcoholic tequila substitute.
Tasting notes
The first thing that stood out to me was the aroma. It had the strongest nose of all five bottles, with smoky, oaky notes that immediately made it feel more premium than many of the others.
It also had the richest mouthfeel of the group, giving it a fuller body rather than the thinner, watery texture I noticed in some of the other bottles. There was a gentle warmth followed by a peppery finish that lingered pleasantly without becoming overpowering.
In a margarita
This is where Free Spirits really shone.
It added depth, complexity and just the right amount of smoky character, creating a margarita that felt balanced and satisfying rather than simply tasting of lime juice. If I served this to friends, I genuinely don't think they'd feel like they were missing out.
It's also infused with B vitamins, although I wouldn't buy it for that reason alone. The flavor is what makes this bottle stand out.
Bottom line
If you're looking for the best non-alcoholic tequila substitute for margaritas and other tequila-based cocktails, this would be my first recommendation.

Monday Zero Alcohol Mezcal (Best Smoky Option)
If smoky mocktails are your thing, Monday Zero Alcohol Mezcal is well worth trying. It's intentionally crafted as a mezcal alternative, so it delivers a bolder, smokier flavor profile than many of the other bottles I tested.
Tasting notes
The first thing I noticed was the peppery aroma, followed by a gentle warmth that built gradually with each sip. The smokiness is unmistakable, but it doesn't overwhelm the palate. Instead, it's balanced by earthy notes and a lingering finish that gives it plenty of character.
Like the other bottles in this roundup, I wouldn't mistake it for traditional mezcal, but it does a great job of capturing the bold, smoky profile you'd expect from one.
In a margarita
The smoky notes really came into their own once mixed into a margarita. They added depth and complexity without overpowering the fresh citrus, resulting in a mocktail that felt balanced, interesting and just a little different from a classic margarita.
Bottom line
If you enjoy smoky drinks, Monday offers something a little different from the other bottles in this roundup. It won't be everyone's favorite, but if you're looking for a bolder non-alcoholic tequila alternative with plenty of character, it's an excellent choice.

Ritual was the biggest surprise of this taste test.
While it wasn't quite as full-bodied as my top two picks, it delivered an excellent margarita and comes in at a more affordable price point, making it a fantastic everyday option.
Tasting notes
Ritual has a pleasant smoky aroma with a noticeable peppery warmth that builds from the front of the palate to the back of the throat. It isn't particularly sweet, and I appreciated that it had a little more body than some of the thinner spirits in this roundup.
While it didn't have quite the same richness as Free Spirits, it still offered plenty of flavor and felt well balanced when sipped neat.
In a margarita
This is where Ritual really impressed me.
The smoky, peppery notes carried through beautifully without overpowering the fresh lime, creating a margarita that felt balanced, refreshing and unmistakably tequila-inspired. If I were making cocktails for a group, this is a bottle I'd happily reach for.
Bottom line
If you're looking for a non-alcoholic substitute for tequila in a margarita that delivers excellent flavor without the premium price tag, Ritual is hard to beat. It may not have taken out my top spot, but it offers outstanding value for money and is a bottle I'd happily recommend.

ISH Mexican Agave Spirit
ISH was a bit of a mixed bag for me.
On its own, I wasn't completely sold. But once it was mixed into a margarita, it became a much more enjoyable drink and showed why so many people recommend it for mocktails.
Tasting notes
ISH has a subtle aroma with a gentle smokiness, but I found it a little thinner than some of my higher-ranked picks. There was a noticeable warmth at the back of the throat, followed by a slightly bitter finish that became more apparent as I continued tasting.
While it wasn't my favorite to sip neat, I could see how some people might enjoy its drier, more savory profile.
In a margarita
The bitterness softened considerably once mixed, allowing the citrus and agave syrup to balance the drink beautifully. While it didn't have quite the depth of Free Spirits or the bold smoky character of Monday, it still made a refreshing and enjoyable margarita.
If you're planning to use your non-alcoholic tequila substitute exclusively for mocktails, I think ISH is a solid option.
Bottom line
ISH didn't quite win me over as a neat pour, but that's not really what I'd buy it for. Mixed into a margarita, it performed well and created a balanced mocktail I'd happily drink again.
Lyre's Agave Blanco Spirit
Lyre's is one of the biggest names in the non-alcoholic spirits world, so I had high hopes going into this taste test. Unfortunately, this was the bottle that left me the most disappointed.
Tasting notes
Sipped neat, I found Lyre's quite strong, with an aroma that came across as slightly chemical to me. Compared to the other bottles I tested, it lacked the body, warmth and peppery finish that I associate with tequila. It wasn't unpleasant, but it didn't capture the tequila experience as well as the other spirits in this roundup.
In a margarita
Like the other bottles, Lyre's improved once it was mixed into a margarita. The fresh lime juice and agave syrup helped bring everything together, creating a refreshing mocktail that was enjoyable to drink.
That said, I still felt it lacked the depth and complexity of my top three picks. If I had the choice between bottles, I'd reach for one of those instead.
Bottom line
Out of the five bottles I tested, Lyre's is the only one I personally wouldn't buy again. That's simply because I think there are stronger non-alcoholic tequila alternatives currently available.
Having said that, I don't want this review to put you off Lyre's as a brand, they are actually one of my all time favorites! Their Italian Spritz is my go-to alcohol-free alternative for a non-alcoholic Aperol Spritz, and it's a bottle I recommend all the time. I just don't think their Agave Blanco reaches the same high standard.
Final Thoughts
If you'd asked me a few years ago whether I'd recommend a non-alcoholic tequila, I probably would've hesitated. But after testing these five bottles side by side, it's clear the category is improving.
While none of them taste exactly like traditional tequila when sipped neat, the best ones make genuinely delicious mocktails and are a fantastic option if you're drinking less or skipping drinking altogether.
If you're looking for my overall recommendation, I'd choose Free Spirits. For lovers of smoky flavours, Monday Zero Alcohol Mezcal is well worth trying, while Ritual Zero Proof offers excellent value if you're making margaritas regularly.
